Job Description - Animal Care Worker 1
Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Shelter Supervisor, the Animal Care Worker I provides a variety of duties in support of the mission statement of the Siskiyou Humane Society. Will also work under the direction of the Shelter Health Coordinator and Behavior Program Coordinator in furthering the Shelter program goals.
- Attends to and cares for housed animals in the shelter by providing the necessary cleaning, feeding, exercising (on leash walks, playtimes in the yard) of animals according to schedules.
- Cleans and disinfects cages, pens, and yard (handle fecal material) by utilizing a variety of cleaning supplies.
- Transfers/transports animals as needed.
- Oversees animal comforts such as temperature control and bedding.
- Responsible for the handling of resources and money.
- Maintains animal charts as needed.
- Provides a variety of miscellaneous office duties
- Answers telephone, directs calls, and greets the public.
- Disseminates educational information as it relates to proper pet responsibilities.
- Performs other related duties as requested to support the goals and objectives of the organization.
Required Skills
- Ability to handle a wide variety of animal needs and temperaments, such as excitable, shy, scared, etc.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships and communication with the public, both in shelter and at offsite events such as animal intake and adoptions.
- Ability to learn to recognize when an animal is in need of medical or behavioral attention, and to advise the appropriate staff person.
- Ability to grasp quickly and accurately new ideas and concepts and to implement newly learned skills.
- Ability to execute behavior and health plans as provided by the Health and Behavior.

- Must be able to work holidays, weekends, evenings, and have a flexible schedule.
- Ability to do heavy lifting, moving, bending over, kneeling, and carrying different sizes of animals and associated items.
Licenses
Possession of a current California Driver’s License and ability to meet Siskiyou Humane Society’s automobile insurance requirements.
Physical Demands
Position requires being on feet for long periods of time, bending, kneeling and occasionally lifting/carrying different sizes of animals and associated items. May occasionally lift up to 40 pounds.
