Job Description - Animal Care Worker 2
Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Shelter Supervisor, the Animal Care Worker II provides a variety of duties in support of the mission statement of the Siskiyou Humane Society. Will also work under the direction of the Shelter Health Coordinator and Behavior Program Coordinator in furthering the Shelter program goals.
Typical Duties
include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Provide injections for animals as needed
- Conducts blood draws as needed
- Administers required medications
- Working knowledge and observations of common medical symptoms and procedures
- Demonstrates effective discretion on when to contact veterinary services
- Can properly groom animals
- Confidant with frightened or dangerous animals
- Demonstrates good safety practices with animals
- Possesses a practical knowledge of animal health and behavior
- Possesses knowledge of sexing and aging of animals
- Trains volunteers and ACWI
- Provides effective animal education to the public
- Possesses knowledge of common referral and ability to recognize when to use referral sources
- Facilitates training for the team and public
- Possesses microscope skills
- Possesses general knowledge of Animal Control regulations
Other Duties:
- Working with the public
- Miscellaneous office duties
- Attending meetings as required
- Telephone skills
- Interacting well with the shelter‘s team, Board members, etc.
- Other associated miscellaneous tasks
Required Skills
- Good public service skills and customer skills
- Must possess proficient skills in effective communications, team work and personal interactions with others, timely learning, reliability and responsible discharge of duties under the direction Shelter Supervisor, good judgment and common sense in both caring for animals and day to day decision making, handle stressful situations, multi tasking skills and prioritizing tasks, safety awareness, good observation of dangerous or different situations, and effective reading and oral communications.
- Able to understand, follow, and comply with specific directions and work under the guidance of a trainer, the Shelter Supervisor and/or Board of Directors.
- Must be able to work interdependently and demonstrate professional demeanor at all times.
- Must be able to work holidays and a flexible schedule
- Possess a valid California Driver’s license and provide a copy proof of valid license and insurance every 6 months
- Work well with others
Physical Requirements:
Position requires being on feet for long periods of time, bending, kneeling and occasionally lifting/carrying different sizes of animals and associated items. May occasionally lift up to 40 pounds.
Licenses
Possession of a current California Driver’s License and ability to meet Siskiyou Humane Society’s automobile insurance requirements.
