Admissions Appointments
What to expect when surrendering your pet
The Siskiyou Humane Society accepts owned cats and dogs by appointment only. If you need to surrender a dog the receptionist will schedule an appointment after completing an initial phone consultation. An appointment does not guarantee that your pet will be accepted; the Siskiyou Humane Society will accept only those pets we can be reasonably assured will be adoption candidates. Conditionally accepted pets will be placed on a waiting list, pending available space in our adoptions department. Anticipated wait times may be as long as five or six months, particularly for cats.
Scheduling an Admissions Appointment
Please call 530-926-4052 to speak with our staff Tues-Sat 11:30-4:00. Or you may leave a message on our voice mail and your call will be returned within 48 hrs. We will discuss all available options, and schedule any appointments as needed. Appointments can be expected to last 30 minutes; please plan accordingly. At the Admissions Appointment, each pet will receive a preliminary evaluation according to the following guidelines:
- Medical Health
- Standardized Behavioral Evaluation
- Adoptability
Animals displaying aggression, or significant behavioral disturbances that would deter from their adoptability, will not be accepted. Animals with evidence of symptoms of any long term, life threatening, or contagious illness will not be accepted.
At the Appointment
Be sure to bring the following items to your scheduled appointment:
- Any veterinarian records you have for your pet
- Any medications your pet receives
- All cats must arrive in a carrier, and all dogs must be leashed.
- Proof of surgical alteration (spay or neuter)
- Proof of current vaccinations (Rabies for dogs and cats four months and older, Distemper and Parvo Vaccination for all dogs and puppies, Feline Panleukopenia for all cats and kittens)
* A $25 Surrender Fee will be required if your animal is conditionally accepted into our program. If your pet has the following veterinary records, this fee will be discounted to $15.00.
